During Open Season 2015, eligible federal employees and annuitants will be able to enroll in the newly established “Self Plus One” enrollment type to be implemented beginning January 1, 2016.

The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013 established a Self Plus One enrollment type in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program. The Self Plus One enrollment type allows you to cover yourself and one eligible family member you designate to be covered.

Please keep the following in mind when considering this new enrollment option:

  • The same enrollee and family member eligibility rules in other
FEHB coverage also apply to Self Plus One.

  • Enrollees need to determine their eligible family members and decide
which enrollment type is best for them.

  • A Self Plus One enrollment type will cover the enrollee and
    one designated eligible family member

It is important to understand that the Self Plus One option is new this year; therefore, you will not be automatically enrolled in that option. If you wish to enroll in this new option, you must positively elect this enrollment type. OPM, agencies and carriers will not initiate enrollment changes on your behalf without you submitting an SF 2809 or making the change through your agency’s self-service enrollment system.

We’ll be communicating much more information about Self Plus One over the next several months. In the meantime, visit www.OPM.gov/selfplusone to learn more about the Self Plus One enrollment type.
