TakeCare in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the Guam Cancer Coalition hosted a Cancer Case Management, Hospice and Palliative Care Conference

(Tamuning, GU) — In celebration of National Hospice and Palliative Care Month, TakeCare Insurance Company, Inc., in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and Guam Cancer Coalition hosted a Cancer Case Management, Hospice and Palliative Care Conference on Friday, November 7, 2014 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tasi Ballroom at Hotel Nikko in Tumon.

The conference provided topics on comprehensive management of cancer patients transitioning to palliative, hospice care and recovery. Off-island speaker, Sheryl Riley RN, OCN, CMCN, director of Clinical Services for SAI Systems International, Inc. will discuss the impact of Cancer Case Management on overall health care costs and patient outcomes. Sheryl is part of a clinical team that focuses on care management including oncology and chronic care, transitions of care, patient centered medical home (PCMH), accountable care organizations, software and electronic health records. “It is a great opportunity for health professionals in Guam to have a professional like Sheryl, with her impressive background and experience to come and speak to us,” said Grace Murphy, Sr. Medical Management Manager at TakeCare. The conference also featured speakers from Guam’s medical community, creating a greater and comprehensive discussion on cancer care and managing transitions to palliative and hospice care.

Nurses and allied health professionals who attended the conference received 6 CE contact hours. Free continuing education units was available to the first 50 registrants.

TakeCare Employee Foundation Presented Grants to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, the Oasis Empowerment Center and Sanctuary Incorporated

TakeCare Employee Foundation to Present Grants to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, the Oasis Empowerment Center and Sanctuary Incorporated

TakeCare Foundation presented three $5,000 grants to local non-profit organizations including the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School, the Oasis Empowerment Center and Sanctuary, Incorporated on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 3 p.m.

“We awarded $5,000 to the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School to assist its project called, ‘A Healthy Village Begins with Us,’ which aims to promote healthy living in the community, $5,000 to the Oasis Empowerment Center to assist with its Creative Therapy Workforce project, and another $5,000 to Sanctuary, Incorporated to aid its Street Project Outreach Program,” said Sylvia Duenas, TakeCare Foundation Advisor.

St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School is a college preparatory institution offering academic programs and activities that provides students with a balance of academic rigor, creative expression and healthy living. The Oasis Empowerment Center offers supportive services, case management, transportation and housing for individuals with disabilities, in recovery, victims of abuse or in poverty, while Sanctuary Incorporated provides community housing and shelter, drug, alcohol and rehab services to Guam’s adolescents.

The Foundation is comprised of employees of TakeCare Insurance and the FHP Health Center who are devoted to charitable and educational causes that enhance the health, wellness and welfare of individuals, families and our community.  The employee-driven organization plays a major role in assisting with the contributions and the selection process.  Through their kind donations, recipients of the grant are able to fulfill their mission and goals that in turn benefit the entire community.
