TakeCare Wellness Group to Offer Childhood Health Improvement Program to Members

Monday, June 27th, 2011

TakeCare Insurance’s Wellness Group will introduce the Children’s Health Improvement Program (CHIP), family-based weight management program for children and adolescents six through 17 years old to its members.  The first CHIP class will take place at the new TakeCare Wellness Center in Tamuning, every Saturday starting this Saturday, June 25 through July 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 16.9% of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese.  Among preschool children aged 2-5, obesity increased from 5.0% to 10.4% between 1976-1980 and 2007-2008 and from 6.5% to 19.6% among those aged 6-11.  Adolescents aged 12-19 showed an increase in obesity form 5.0% to 18.1% during the same period.

“Though we don’t have actual numbers to actually indicate the prevalence of obesity among children here in Guam, it is important to note that co morbidities associated with obesity and overweight are similar in children as in the adult population. Obesity in childhood, particularly in adolescence, is a key predictor for obesity in adulthood,” said Grace Murphy, Manager, TakeCare Medical Management.

TakeCare’s CHIP offers services including six Saturday nutrition and fitness group classes from a certified trainer, one on one appointment with a nutrition educator for counseling, free educational materials on nutrition, fitness and lifestyle changes, telephone counseling support from nurse case manager for members with lifestyle issues and guidance and monitoring from FHP healthcare providers when necessary.

“Our island’s youth is one of our most precious resources. We need to safeguard our youth by investing on ways to promote their health and well-being. It all starts with the family and CHIP offers a family-based management program where everyone can get involved and participate,” said Murphy.
